Real-time strategy games tend to follow a familiar template. You have a base that might or might not be mobile. The buildings attached to the base and some smaller affiliate bases (if available) are responsible for producing troops, so you can eliminate or defend against those who want to attack you. You find a way to gather resources to keep funding your battle, and eventually, you either destroy the enemy’s base or get destroyed after a long, drawn-out skirmish. The formula is sound, and just about every possible theme has been used with this type of gameplay in mind. Worbital is a little different from a typical RTS title, but those differences make it very intriguing.
The campaign premise is familiar enough for sci-fi fans. In deep space, a planet is on the brink of dying due to the limited amount of remaining resources. With various choices being taken off the table, one last option is to take to the stars and colonize nearby planets. The plan works, but it doesn’t take long before the populations of each planet begin to argue, and war erupts. The premise seems very serious, but strangely, it’s played up for laughs in a dark comedy sort of way. The leader of each of the three factions exhibits curious but familiar traits, including random and reckless, glory-seeking and impulsive, and vicious yet calculating. It works in making the game feel more casual — a noble mission to undertake when you discover what Worbital is about.

The game is billed as an RTS because there is no option to pause and plan out your actions while everyone else is frozen. It’s better to think of this game as an artillery shooter similar to Worms, but everything is built on planets instead of on traditional land masses or the nebulous void of space. Your planet is essentially your base, and the size of the celestial body determines how much room you have to build structures. Currency is earned by inflicting damage on opponents, getting damaged yourself, and firing at other smaller planets so there’s no real way of running out of funds. The structures on your planet also happen to act as impromptu defenses for the planet itself as the main goal of each faction is to destroy enough of the planet to get to the molten core then destroy that to effectively wipe out the enemy.
That seems simple on paper, but lots of little nuances make the basic gameplay feel rather deep. For instance, just about everything except for your resource generator requires some charging. You can fire off two missiles at a time, but you’ll still have to wait for at least one of those missiles to recharge before you can fire. Deplete only a little bit of your laser cannon, and you’ll still have to wait for it to fully recharge before firing again. The same goes for things like your defensive shotgun, so timing when to fire is a good way to ensure that you aren’t left helpless as you wait for a weapon to become available.
Gravity is another thing to worry about, and while you do expect that from a regular artillery shooter, the fact that you’re in space means that gravity acts very differently. The gravitational pull of the planets affects your shots, so the slight pull that each celestial body exhibits is enough to turn near-misses into direct hits. The gravity of the sun affects shots to a greater degree, so you’re forced to arc shots or make them spin in odd paths if you want to land a trick shot or fool your opponents into thinking you missed before they’re surprised with an errant hit.

Orbits also play a big part in the game, as you have to pay attention to where you’re circling in addition to the constant rotation of your planet. When combined with gravity, that means the pathway of a shot constantly shifts, and a once-perfect shot can miss due to the distance and the position of the target planet. It also means that some of your defenses can save you in the nick of time when the arc finally lines up with an incoming shot — or disappoint when that same arc leaves the vicinity of an incoming missile at the very last moment.
Factions also have unique special abilities that can be game-changing. For example, one faction has the power to swap orbits with another planet, which makes for daring escapes or allows you to get into a more strategic position against others. Another faction can dislodge from orbit to crash into others; it can be an unpredictable ball of doom until you master your weapons. Yet another faction has the ability to blow up its own planet, an odd move until you realize that chunks of planets do significant damage to nearby entities, essentially giving you a massive bomb — provided you have another planet under your control to fall back on.
All of the features are exciting, as it makes for unpredictable moments in every skirmish. The presence of gravity, orbiting, and planet rotation means that there’s a decent learning curve to overcome, and lots of battles will devolve into chaos until that’s mastered. There aren’t too many different battlefields to choose from, but each one feels good, as you’ll have to worry about flying debris in asteroid-filled fields or creating chaos by blowing up the sun and letting the black hole slowly eat away at everyone. Even for strategy veterans, this feels different, and it’s certainly an easier game to pick up and understand compared to the developer’s previous game, Interplanetary, which had the same premise but was more serious and turn-based.

The campaign has you playing through the storylines for all three factions. Unlike many other games, the campaign for each faction is rather short, maxing out at about four stages each. The brevity is initially surprising, but you’ll appreciate it since that means you aren’t spending time having the gameplay mechanics be drip-fed to you. Skirmish play pits you against three bots, a modern staple in RTS games. In a surprising move, the title comes with local multiplayer for up to four human players. This doesn’t use LAN, however, as Worbital uses same- and split-screen multiplayer, with everyone using gamepads instead of a keyboard/mouse combination. The simple mechanics of the game makes gamepad play feasible, and the dynamic nature of human gameplay versus that of CPU adversaries means that the experience is enjoyable as long as everyone is down to play in a genre that’s not known for local play.
Playing in the campaign against other players, either locally and against bots, gains currency that’s used to unlock cosmetic pieces and unlock new abilities and weapons. That’s a great thing, as you discover that the online community is absent. Try as we might, we were unable to find anyone online playing, forcing us to resort to bot-filled matches. On the one hand, this means that the game has a good amount for players to do either locally or on their own. Car mechanic simulator 2018 free. The overall presentation is simple but fine. The sound lacks any vocal performances, which would’ve been a good way to know when one of your buildings has been destroyed. The effects are good enough, while the music does a fine job of creating the mood of participating in an epic space battle without becoming too overbearing. Graphically, Worbital sports plenty of bright colors for the planets, and while the color palette isn’t deep, it works well enough to give off a look that isn’t cheap. The lack of a super-detailed background means that the game handles tons of particles well, and explosions look satisfying considering how long it takes for a medium-sized planet to get chipped away and blown up.
Worbital’s features mean that it’ll take some time before players get acclimated to it. Once you get used to the gameplay, you’ll find it to be a perfect blend of RTS and artillery shooter, with some gravity effects thrown in. It’s a shame that the online community is practically nonexistent, but the presence of local multiplayer and the ability to earn currency while playing against friends or bots ensures that it isn’t a completely dead game once the campaign has been completed. If you’re looking for something different and fun, give Worbital a shot.

If you’ve played Interplanetary by Team Jolly Roger, you may be wondering if you have already played a similar game—and you would be half right. Worbital takes the core gameplay elements of Interplanetary, gravity-influenced weapons and a solar system in a chaotic free-for-all, and instead of a turn-based system this game chooses to use real-time combat. In addition, there are mini-game mechanics such as Asteroid (Atari) controls for spaceships and twin-stick shooting with Gatling guns. While these core ideals are the same, Worbital requires more time and practice—along with strategy—to adjust to the skill curve, but once you get the swing of things, you’ll be like Frank Sinatra swinging moons among the stars (and hopefully not into your own planet).

Now if you haven’t played Interplanetary, the barrage of learning on your own may intimidate you when things become hectic. Instead of maintaining five cities and experimenting on your turns, Worbital uses eight sections of an always-rotating planet that also revolves around the star with dozens (or even hundreds) of projectiles to distract you from managing your own planet. Then you also have other players who are off in their own little worlds to avoid their demise. Hotkeys are not mandatory, but the minimalistic UI and the constant rush of information makes them even more beneficial. Needless to say, as difficult as this situation was to convey without putting you off, the pace gets in your way of learning, and the only solution is to get enough practice.
To help you get your spacefaring legs, Worbital features a couple of options from the get-go. The tutorial provided does just enough to get you familiar with the controls and the core mechanics, but it doesn’t emphasize how important Tiers of technology come into play. Inside the practice menu, the “Sandbox Option” allows you to test out your loadouts in a safe environment with non-hostile AI; there is also the option to play against one AI or against all three with different difficulty settings. Finally, there are the twelve/thirteen campaign missions with all three factions, which provide you pre-made loadouts for different situations. Whatever you choose, the game will reward you with Dark Matter points, in-game currency (not purchasable), either from success or from how many planets you killed.Worbital Campaign
These points can be spent on new armaments or new cosmetic items available by faction rewards for spending points, which the game has a staggering amount to sate players for a decent chunk of time. You will often earn 800 to 1000 per mission, so the rates aren’t that bad and the developers have shared they have plans to add more cosmetics and new loadout weapons. Whatever path you choose, the game will prepare you and it will reward you for your time.
What they don’t tell you is the target is marked as a Sol-loser.
Speaking of loadouts, each faction has slightly different choices, which will naturally lead to players creating their own builds online (or amongst friends on the couch). Some choices like automated refiners are shared amongst all whereas other factions may get unique stuff like orbiting-projectiles as shields. Regardless what faction you choose, the tiering system acts the same: Tier 1 weapons are quick money-makers from automated refineries to generating income from constant barrages; Tier 2 weapons are the real source of basic firepower; and Tier 3 offers quirky or devastating weapons like an asteroid that will split apart before impact or a temporary black hole with gravitational pull. Whether these factions are properly balanced remained to be seen as the game has only been in a press-beta/closed-beta, so bear that in mind when competing online; however, from the time I have played, no faction stands out as overpowering one another if played smartly.Quirks, Quasars and Quandaries
With some general information and a few useful tips out of the way, let’s discuss some issues with the wonkier elements of the game. For starters, as mentioned before, mini-games like the Asteroid controls for small spaceships can be too imprecise and too much of a time-sink versus the time you could spend to improve your strategy. Remote controlled missiles, splitting projectiles, nuclear bombs, etc. are better alternatives because they only require you to hit the target, not spinning in circles trying to line-up a shot. Dreadnaughts, on the other hand, require much less work to control and they offer more damage, but they are balanced by being Tier 3 weapons and you can only have one. (Ships also don’t return home, so you have to buy more of them.) Other weapons have similar questionable mechanics, but these two ships are the clearest example.
Which one would you rather bring to a fight?
This problem isn’t so much an objective failing with the game as I imagine there will be one or two Asteroid wizzes out there who will make this build work for them. The situation is more so an open question about whether some gameplay elements fit with others or if they will need to be changed later. On the whole, however, the gameplay and the controls on mouse-and-keyboard are solid and there are no noticeable issues, which is what I would also say about the campaign.
Earlier I had said this game is more of a multiplayer focused title, but introverts like myself shouldn’t feel left out because the campaign, while short and simple, has its appeal. As far as campaign offerings, Worbital is a lot like Starcraft in that the missions are geared towards preparing you for the big-boy strategies online. These games also split up their missions between three factions—four missions per faction—although here in Worbital the stories are more like alternative time-lines than one cohesive story. These missions all revolve around taking out one or two planets by yourself, but they give you different tools to figure out the solution on your own. While there are difficulty spikes between one mission and the next, once you understand how to properly use the loadout over time—or multiple tries—the missions become more bearable. Even though all these missions are essentially the same, blow everyone else up, the game does its best to prevent stagnation by always changing the situation with no filler when it probably could have benefited from adding more. It also manages to tell a humorous story that, while family-friendly, is a lot darker than it has any right to be.

Describing the tone of Worbital is almost as challenging as talking about the gameplay. At its core, it’s a tale of three friends who each want to solve the impending resource crisis for their home planet, but they have different solutions. You have the Terrene who want to stay at their home planet, yet they also expand their resources away from home; you have the Luna, which they want to eliminate all other factions because the calculations say there isn’t enough for everyone; and then you have the Celestials who believe colonizing the stars without end is the only solution.
As serious as this situation is portrayed, the comedy offsets the darker aspects such as the realization that you’re committing genocide on a planet that looks right out of a Dr. Seuss book. Again, as I said about the gameplay, this isn’t a problem; in fact, the tone-shifts make those darker elements more amusing. None of these issues should undervalue how much I truly adore Worbital for what it is, and I can definitely say that I have not played a game quite like it before. Devil Daggers is a first-person shootervideo game developed and published by indie development team Sorath. Devil Daggers opens with the player character standing in a shadowy room; in front of them is a floating dagger illuminated by a spotlight.[1] Upon retrieving the dagger, the player is transported to a flat, floating platform arena cloaked in darkness.[1][2][3] In the arena, demonic enemies begin spawning.[1] Initially, a series of tentacled, towering creatures spawn and start releasing swarms of flying skulls that pursue the player.[1][2] As time progresses, more exotic creatures that pose a greater threat and exhibit different behaviour begin to appear.[2][3][4] Each enemy makes a unique and continuous noise, so that the player is able to recognise what type of enemy is approaching them.[1][5]
The player kills enemies by firing daggers from their fingers.[3] There are two firing options: clicking the left-mouse button fires a shotgun-like blast of daggers with a wide spread, and holding the mouse button down fires a precise, continuous stream of daggers.[1] Some enemies have weak spots indicated by red crystals on their bodies.[5] Once dead, the red crystals are dropped and can be gathered by the player to obtain attack upgrades, such as increased damage and homing daggers.[1][3][5] The player dies when coming into physical contact with an enemy or falling off the stage.[3] At the top of the screen, a timer displays how long the playthrough has lasted.[3] The player’s best survival time is published on a global leaderboard.[6] Accessed via the leaderboard, replays of playthroughs can be downloaded and watched from either a first-person view or a top-down perspective.[4]
As enemies accumulate in the arena, the amount of safe space decreases.[3] This, alongside the enemies’ aggressive behaviour, encourages constant player movement and spatial awareness.[2][3][5] The player character can move at high speed and jump to perform evasive manoeuvres.[1][2] The game employs advanced movement techniques to increase player speed and jump height. Devil Daggers was developed by Sorath, a Melbourne-based independent video game developer. The development group was formed by Matt Bush, a member of Dustforce creators Hitbox Team.[1][2][7] The game’s art direction and rendering engine were designed to reimagine the aesthetics and graphical style of video games from the 1990s. The game’s fluid movement system was compared to arena shooters Quake III Arena and Unreal Tournament 2004 by Edge magazine. They welcomed the inclusion of advanced movement techniques, saying they felt ’fresh’ when implemented in a survival context. Septerra Core: Legacy of the Creator is a role-playing video game developed by Valkyrie Studios and published by Monolith Productions. It was originally released in 1999 for Windows; since then, it has been re-released via GOG.com for Windows in 2009, for MacOS in 2013, and for Linux in 2017.Gameplay[edit]
The gameplay area has two different depths: the world map and the location maps. The player is given the opportunity of interacting with other characters, visiting stores, fighting battles, and so forth, while the world map serves the purpose of transporting the player from one location map to the other. At some points in the story, such as the beginning, the game is linear on the world map; at other times the player can move to battlefields to gain more experience for the characters. Within dungeons there is a choice of movement to pick up the required magic items in any order, but one cannot rest to full health within. Each combat sequence is accompanied by a random battle-music track, during which the player characters and their opponents leap to their stations on an isometric grid. The player cannot alter their location during the game, not even if the villain directly in front of one is defeated. There is a ’dial’ for each of the three player characters, which moves past two break points, and ultimately to a maximum power level, as time goes along. After the first break point, the player may choose to have that player attack at a low level, or join with another character for a combined attack. Spells, either for a given character or combo, may be set up and cast at low, medium, or maximum power level as well. While the player chooses to wait until the characters are powered-up, the enemy attacks.[2]Characters[edit]Playable Characters[edit]
In total there is 9 playable characters to be unlocked. The player gets the choice to customize his roster of 3 characters at once. Certain characters have different interactions with different people, objects or scenery.[3]
*Maya: The main protagonist of the game. She is a young woman from Shell 2, who scavenges useful items from the junk piles. As a girl, her village was destroyed and her parents killed when the Chosen, the inhabitants of the topmost Shell, decided to bring their airborne conflicts to her peaceful home town. You will start your adventure with Maya. She is the main character of the Septerra Core story; however, during the course of the game you will encounter a variety of characters who will join you in your quest to save Septerra from destruction.
*Grubb: He is Maya’s friend. A reclusive mechanical wizard who can turn the bounty of junk on Shell 2 into just about any machine he can think of. Grubb has the ability to repair things, which can be used in combat to heal mechanical/cyborg allies.
*Runner: Grubb’s oddest and best creations, an enormous and affable junk-bot that can walk on two legs or run on four. Runner seems like a massively overgrown puppy-dog at times, but he is a ferocious ally in combat. Runner has the ability to steal when browsing a shop.
*Corgan: A member of the courageous and dedicated Holy Guard, the protectors of Shell 3 and of the legacy of Marduk, Corgan is a skilled defensive sword fighter with a knack for diplomacy. Until a certain side mission is completed, Corgan does not completely trust Selina and there is a random of chance that Corgan will automatically use his turn during combat to attack Selina or vice versa, if they are paired on the same team.
*Led: The young daughter of a great military leader, General Campbell, Led is a skilled mechanic whose preferred Weapon is a giant wrench. She has two artificial legs which are the result of an accident during military training. Ever since then, her father has forbidden her to fight for her country. The only character other than Grubb who has the repair ability.
*Araym: A thief and bounty hunter, he can use his detachable, spider-like mechanical limbs for a variety of attacks. The only character other than Runner who has the steal ability when browsing a shop.
*Selina: One of Doskias’ generals and his lover, Selina is a dark, mysterious and powerful warrior with a knack for mystical Core Spells. Though in the start of the game Selina is an antagonist, as the game progresses, she has a change of heart and is unlocked as a playable character.
*Badu: A member of the inhuman race of the Underlost, the enormous Badu is a powerful warrior but a bad communicator — he only speaks his native tongue. This character has very few interactions with people outside of his homeland, but very useful when the player needs to communicate with other Underlost people who can only speak in their native tongue.
*Lobo: he was once a mindless cyborg created to defend his country from marauding pirates, but after crash landing during battle he was found and rebuilt by a renegade mechanic. After acquiring free thought, he became a pirate, to fight against the very country that made him. This characters attacks in combat are very similar to Maya, and they can share a lot of weapon accessories.Non Playable Characters[edit]
There are a ton of non playable characters, or NPCs, that the player can interact with which have countless reactions to various playable characters which makes talking to the same NPC when playable characters are swapped always worth a try. Below some of the NPCs who are integral to the story are mentioned.[4]
*Uncle: He is known simply as uncle because Maya, and many of the orphans in her hometown Oasis, were raised by this kindly man.
*Azziz: The orphans of Oasis are taught by Azziz, the wise master of the temple that celebrates the great Marduk. Azziz is a good source of information about the world of Septerra.
*Bowman: The leader of the Holy Guard. He has trained Corgan and other Holy Guard and is also the father of Layla.
*Layla: She is Corgan’s one true love, and also another member of the Holy Guard. She is the daughter of Bowman who worries about her when going into battle.Development[edit]
Septerra Core was originally being developed by Rabid Entertainment.[5] After Rabid Entertainment closed its doors, Valkyrie Studios took over and finished development. The game was released by Monolith Productions in October 1999 for the PC. The game was scored by Marty O’Donnell, and featured minor voice work from Steve Downes.[6]
